Invisalign Care

Using Invisalign is a convenient, discreet way to straighten your teeth — but like any orthodontic treatment, it works best when the aligners are properly cared for. Below is a comprehensive guide to help your Invisalign treatment stay on track and your smile stay healthy.

1. Wear Time & Schedule

  • Wear 23-24 hours per day: Aligners should be worn throughout the day and night, removing them only for brushing, and flossing. Eat with your aligners on, if you can.
  • If you decide to remove your aligners while eating, then please keep them out for 15-20 mins only. Don’t leave your aligners out for extended periods — it can result in interrupted forces which result in lack of movement of teeth.
  • Switch aligners on schedule: Change to your next set of aligners exactly as your orthodontist directs (often twice/week). Delays can lead to misfits or treatment delays.

2. Cleaning & Hygiene

  • Rinse every time you remove them: When you take out your aligners, immediately rinse with tap water to flush away saliva and debris.
  • Brush gently, both your teeth & aligners: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush your aligners with tap water only. It can be easily done after every meal. If possible, brush your teeth after every meal.
  • Avoid hot water & mouthwash: Hot water can warp the aligner plastic. Colored or alcohol-based mouthwash can stain or damage them.

3. Eating, Drinking & Staining

  • Avoid sugary drinks such as pop, iced tea, juice, Gatorade etc. Avoid any fizzy drinks including the ones with zero sugar. High concentration of sugar on your teeth or carbonic acid in fizzy drinks can cause decay on multiple in a very short period, often in few days
  • If possible, eat with your aligners. If, however, you decide to remove your aligners, then do not keep them out for more than 10-15 minutes. Remember, aligners should stay and work on your teeth all the time (same as braces).
  • If possible, brush before reinserting: Make sure your teeth and aligners are clean before putting them back.
  • Avoid staining substances: Coffee, tea, red wine, colored sodas, berries, curry — all can stain or tint your aligners.

4. Handling Discomfort & Common Issues

  • When you start a new set of aligners, it’s common to feel mild pressure or tightness. This is a sign that the aligners are actively moving your teeth. The sensation usually fades within a day or two as your teeth adjust.
  • As your teeth shift into their new positions, the surrounding bone and tissues naturally adjust. This can make your teeth feel slightly loose at times. It is a normal and expected part of orthodontic tooth movement.
  • If you lose an aligner or it breaks (which is uncommon), move ahead to the next set in your series. Each aligner typically makes a very small amount of movement, so most patients can transition to the next aligner without difficulty.
